A case of parents behaving badly

Bragging about their kids seems to come with the territory of being a parent. I have nothing against it as long as it doesn't really hurt some one else or put some one else's kid down. It's a well known fact perhaps that when a set number of parents assemble at one given area at a given time the kids usually end up featuring in majority of the conversations.Take for example this following conversation.

Mrs.Roy- "Gee,just look at my little pintoo,he just started going potty all by himself last week" (pausing expectedly as if to wait for a shower of confetti)

Mrs.Spencer- " That's great Mrs.Roy,I am still struggling to get my little girl Pinky to go potty, she ends up screaming like a banshee everytime I try to seat her on the toilet seat" (with a solemn look that seemed to harden the moment it settled on little Pintoo, then followed with a big sigh)

Mrs. Roy
- "Some kids are just a little ahead of their age Mrs. Spencer,my Pintoo is very smart ,he is already able to talk to us. He has always been fast. He even walked at 8 months you see,I remember however your Pinky didn't walk till she was atleast 16 months didn't she?(with a sympathetic look which almost appeared to be suppressed by an exceedingly overwhelming Cheshire cat grin)

Mrs. Spencer
-(with a sad tone) "I guess it was that 2 glasses of wine I had during the last month of my pregnancy,I knew I shouldn't have yielded to the temptation"

Mrs. Roy- Oh,don't feel bad, afterall it's not every kid who is a fast learner and smarter like Pintoo, and I'm sure your Pinkoo will go potty soon" (Classic rubbing the salt in the wound move)

Mrs.Spencer then decided to walk off from this conversation and settled herself near the window sipping her wine and comforting a stressed out mom to be. Surely this would be more pleasant, the little guy in the womb surely cannot match her Pinky!

Meanwhile little Pintoo and Pinky got into a fight and started throwing their edible "goldfish" at each other. They were soon joined by another set of kids who simply joined in the fight for fun, resulted in more goldfish on the floor and sofa( I almost choked on my juice as I watched those goldfish pieces crumble and fly on to the sofa I had cleaned with such diligence,I had to turn my face away from the crime scene)

Then came Mrs. Nasty- Oh,this has been fun. Good party eh?!and how are you Mrs.no nonsense

Mrs. No nonsense
-Doing good Mrs.Nasty
(She tries to sit down and have a conversation but courtesy little Bella, who seems to be her clingy self refusing to settle down on the floor even for a minute)
Mrs.Nasty- "Bella seems to be clingy. I think you should have taken her out and get her to mingle with people more. See my little angel there. She is so easy going, she is never this clingy. Look at her now,she is going to almost everyone here. We always took her out from day one"(casting the incredulous look at Bella, and a pathetic look at the mom for being such a bad parent who she thinks holds Bella in captivity and raising her to be such an anti-social creature)

Mrs.No nonsense-"I knew I had to remove her chains every other day and let her free to roam atleast an hour from her cage. I just forgot to do that yesterday what with this shower and all. perhaps its time to teach those leap into arms of strangers trick to her. How did you teach that to little angel?banana no longer does the trick does it?" (This friend makes me proud doesn't she)

Mrs.Nasty
- HA HA HA!You are so funny!Good joke

Mrs. No nonsense-Glad you think so Mrs. Nasty!
(I gave her a thumbs up and had to rush to the mom-to-be who was casting looks of SOS from the ladies group which seemed to be bombarding her with suggestions and advices)

Sometimes I wonder why is that people lose their sensitivity when it comes to bragging about their kids. I don't think being proud about your kid's achievements is something bad, every parent has a right to be proud of their offspring and show them off. But when it gets competitive and when bragging about the kids takes on a form of one-upmanship it loses its charm and becomes a pain. Some of the parents can brag enough to put the candidates on the Donald Trump reality show to shame. It's like a fierce competition which starts from the time the kid is born. "Your kid weighed how much?Oh...seems he was so underweight eh?" "Your little one hasn't rolled over yet?mine did already 3months back, why is he slow?"

"My little one has already started reading Shakespear and build a model of the white house in another hand along with being a mathwhiz and his teacher told him he is "gifted' with the best brains god could give (exaggeration is always the key),we are so happy. Too bad though that your girl didn't make it even to the literary club" Urgh! Then there are those who put on slogans about their kids on their bumper stickers of the car highlighting the achievements to the world to see. I so wish they would all just zip it and let the kids be kids and not let this adult sense of competiton and senseless rat race consume them. I wish we could give the parents some time outs too!

Anyway the shower however in general was fun albeit these observations:) the mom to be immensely enjoyed the gifts we picked for her(Raysh,we got her This) and the menu was amazing. Ina however went a step ahead and picked up a few words from the party to include in her expanding baby-o-cabulary ,sadly one of those words was "S@#$",I know I can now brag perhaps that my not so smart kid can atleast cuss like a pro!I however pray she would get over it soon. I can't imagine the look the baby sitter is going to have on her face when I drop her off tomorrow!Call it anything you want but life with a toddler can never be called dull!

Yeah, there are more than a few parents I'd like to send to the corner for a time-out.

Besides, their children are nowhere near as cool or as advanced as my boy.

i wonder how parents can be so insensitive to the feelings of other children when they some themselves...you'd think they'd be more thoughtful!! oh well, i'm on my way to learning this, i guess :) btw, i love the gift!! is this available all over the US and does it double as a pram and the seat thingy? i'd like to ask my brother to get this for me :)

I don't like parents who indulge their kids too much, which results in producing huge numbers of mummy ke bachee esp. back home in our society.

As far as rest is concerned I will cross the bridge when the river comes and get back to you in 5 years :P

yeah what is with one-up-man-ship??? I hate it too...or maybe its becoz sonny's taking his own sweet time to talk while concentrating solely on the jumping, running, climbing????

Yep a lot of parents are guilty of this, some of it may be harmless though. But it never stops.. no matter how old the kids are. There areplenty of elderly parents bragging about how their Raju has the best job or how their guddi has a huge mansion.

Hey Fuzzy:
THat was such a funny read!

By the way my ex-boss a 60-year old man used to brag about his 30-year old daughter and 27-year old son who were the same age as his secretary and doing better than her careerwise. can you beat that? LOL

I am dealing with the Mr and Mrs. Bragalot as we speak. They have a son the same age as Li'l A. Even to the rest of us it is pretty evident that they have sharp kid with a mean brain but the minute we enter their house till we depart....they go on and on....I think it is extremely rude especially since we take Li'l A over for some play time and the comparisons are rife..I am happy with with what I have for a child...he is just a child, no Einstein but when I am there..they make me want to convert Li'l A into one and I hate it!!

LoL @ no-nonsense mom... women can be so coy! We have a brag-alot in our fam as well...I just ignore. It's absurd, but I can't help but wonder what impact it has on the kiddos really. Do they become manipulative or just manipulated?
The mom who asked 'why is he so slow?' would have sent my blood boiling... 'He may be slow to roll over, but at least he isn't ugly to people.' ;)

Dorky dad-LOL,I know how dare they compare our cool kids to their wacky ones rite?

Noodlehead-I think this one is available even in the US and actually it is a whole travel system and car seat also is included. You can ask your brother to check it out at the local "Toys r us" in US.And this model is a pretty good one too.Regarding the parents being insensitive,it's sad but true. You just have to ignore such remarks and take it on your stride. Trust me you will know how to deal with it when the time comes;)

Ricky-Over indulging kids is something which is equally disconcerting.I know what you say when you call it as being mumme ke bacche, haven't we seen so many of them around!Oh yes you can get back about this topic after 5-6 yrs, perhaps this will help you to remember to watchout for such things when it happens:)

STS-LOL,let sonny take his own sweet time in getting to do things,I think each child is unique and I feel a lot many times what such competitive parents say are pretty much exaggerated!
I say let's enjoy our kids the way they are and not let some one else's horn touting disturb us or doubt our little ones.

Nainaashley-So true,I know it never actually stops.First perhaps it will be about their kid and then when grandkids come into the picture they take over the limelight.I too had a friend whose mom kept comparing us from childhood until we got married and moved out to separate continents and even now when I meet her she never stops!

Rayshma-Oh,running away is something I would love to do too,but most of the times such people find you in such social situations from which you can't escape. They can be such a pain!
Glad to know you liked the gift and yes the party was indeed a whole lot of fun!

@-LOL,you are definilty not in that category @,your blog is a wonderful collection of your parenting experience and ofcourse you as a parent ought to be proud of your offspring and you are not guilty of anyday of comparing little kodi with any other kid.Little kodi is unique and so are you!I will surely pass on the compliment to my no-nonsense friend. She is pretty good with such answers, probably will get some more from her on request:)

Sai-lol,wow your boss certainly leads the crowd of bragging parents:)He is pretty mean in comparing his kids careers to his secretary!I sometimes wonder what pleasure do people get by putting other people down and proving themselves as better.Well all sorts of people make up this world I guess.

Singleton-LOL,I'm pretty sure they will when the time comes to that.I can't wait to see them shut their mouth up when their lovely adorable offsprings step into their teens and give them their piece of mind:)

Boo-wow thanks for the honor!I will certainly check this site out and yours too. Thanks for coming by boo!

Orchid-Yes,I think the whole braggot lot have one main mission to accomplish, they just end up making us feel bad for our kids.I try to nip such conversations in the bud or try to tune out when they go on their bragging tirade. But I know it can be hard when you have to deal with such parents when they happen to be your kid's friend's.Just ignore them Orchi,Li'l A is a pretty smart kid.Einstein or not they are our kids and we ought to cherish them!

Skinny-LOL,that last one was a good line, will use it in future:)
Yes ignoring works at times but it doesn't quite faze such people. They never take a hint and stop.I think it's bad for the kids if they are at the receiving end of such comments. But then I guess if the parents don't play into such games that can play wonders for the kid's spirits.Ladies can be coy at times very true!

NZ-Thanks for coming by!and don't feel guilty of bragging about your kid in the blog,I think each one of us has that right to be proud of our offspring and trust me I do a lot of bragging too. But we never put any other kid or parents down and that;s what really matters.I truly enjoy your blog!is it ok to blogroll you?

Dramadiv@-Wow,where are you planning to go in India?I hope you enjoy your stay!I am pretty excited about my coming trip in the last week of this month!!

Orhan-Tell me about it:)I wish some parents mouths came with a key!

Just loved this post. I completely identify with mrs no nonsense. My god those Mrs Roy's can give anyone a headache.
Kids grow up and hence moms outgrow this kind of bragging. what about those who constantly go "namm yejamanru" ( My husband this my husband that!)

i agree.. sometimes you just wanna smack them over the head... how does it matter when the damn cord dropped?!!!

in fact i dont talk to ppl abt my son .. i just blog! that way if you dont like it you can chose the window... what do u do in a social situation that is getting increasinly painful or insensitive and u are too well brought up to be rude?

on the other hand, and i just did a post on this.. in the attempt not to be a bragalot, you end up never sharing the pleasure of baby talk with even ppl who dont brag... so many of my friends are as casual abt their babies as me... and its only recently that i have also started talking abt baby...

whew..long comment - i should have done a post!
